The History of the KitchenAid Mixer:
Analogous to many home devices, the standing mixer has industrial antecedents. Engineer Herbert Johnson invented the original mixer in 1915. He came up with the idea soon after seeing a baker mixing bread dough with a metal spoon. His 80-quart Hobart mixer was became regular equipment on all U.S. Navy vessels. The mixer was also typical in allot commercial bakeries.
How did they come up with the name? In 1918, company executives were alleged to be testing machines in their houses. "I do not care what you call it," one of the testers said, "all I know is it's the finest kitchen aid I've ever used."
That name caught on. But the mixers weren't low-priced. The initial 5-quart counter top KitchenAid mixers sold for $189.50, or around $2,000 nowadays. and they weighed approximately 65 pounds.
Though, that all changed in 1936, once the pioneering industrial designer Egmont Ahrens trimmed the mixer and the price down to $55. The iconic streamline shape has not changed since after that since as the Ahrens' bullet silhouette is patented.
Earlier on, retailers were slow to sell the KitchenAid mixer. Hobart met the retailer's reluctance by utilizing a direct sales force. This sales force was comprised primarily of women who went door to door offering demonstrations of the Kitchenaid food preparation tool. In 1919, the creation of a citrus juice extractor and food grinder was attached to the mixer. These mixers grew to become much more versatile "food preparation tools" and were were subsequently styled. The KitchenAid mixer today can be converted to scores of uses from a pasta maker to a sausage stuffer or with extra attachments like a grain mill.
Fundamentally, the mixer's mechanics identical as they were in 1919. It is noteworthy to add that tens of millions of KitchenAid mixers were manufactured at the same Greenville, Ohio, factory where the first Kitchenaid mixer was produced in 1919.
